The Italian startup Eco4Cloud wins UP 2012 – Cloud Computing Conference in San Francisco

The Italian startup Eco4Cloud wins the UP 2012 Cloud computing conference in San Francisco in the category “Best Data Center Infrastructure Management Solution 2012”.

The startup, which last April took a seed investment of 300k from Italian fund dpixel and Principia and is now in due diligence for a smart first round of 1,5 million euros, has deveoloped a breakthrough solution capable to cut down energy consumption in data center and get savings up to 35%.

The Eco4Cloud solution ( self-organizing and automatic) organize modern cloud computing infrastructure and virtualisation platform in a new way, “an approach inspired by nature itself (the organization of ants) where each server autonomously decides whether or not to accept a new application, or to ask the migration of an application to another server”.

In few words, the Eco4cloud software consolidates the virtual machines (VMs) on as few servers as possible, and powers off or hibernates the remaining servers. Consumed power and carbon emissions are reduced, and hibernated servers can be reutilized.

The four computer scientists team have collaborated with the ICAR-CNR Institute, the Institute for High Performance Computing and Networks of the Italian National Research Council, located in Southern Italy, specifically in Cosenza. In 2011 they won StartCup Calabria (an Italian competition dedicated to accademic spin off and startups) and a Working Capital in Turin, the special Telecom program dedicated to innovative projects.

The solution has already been tested in Telecom data center located in Bari.
