Pi School and ESA together for EVE, LLM for Earth observation

Pi School, founded in 2017 by Translated to address the shortage of qualified professionals in the field of AI announces that it has kicked off the development of EVE, Earth virtual expert, a state-of-the-art Large language model with expertise in Earth observation (EO) and Earth sciences. The project is supported by a €1 million budget from the European Space Agency’s Φ (phi) laboratory.

EVE is a digital artificial intelligence expert able to answer complex Earth science questions using reliable data and natural language, developed by Pi School in collaboration with Imperative Space. It is part of the ESA Φ-lab #AI4EO initiative to revolutionise data-driven insights for science, the environment and society.

“At Pi School, we believe that AI can transform the way we understand our planet. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the connection between AI and EO,” says Isabelle Andrieu, CEO of Pi School, in a note. EVE is intended to make insights more accessible and impactful and to ensure that Earth observation knowledge is available to everyone, from experts to the general public’.

“Pi School’s expertise in the development of artificial intelligence, combined with our vision of the future of Earth observation, makes this collaboration an important step towards building innovative solutions that will improve global access to critical Earth observation knowledge,” says Nicolas Longépé, Earth observation data scientist at ESA Φ-lab and leader of the EVE project.

The project will feature a user-friendly web platform and an API for application development, enabling seamless integration and accessibility for researchers, policy makers and practitioners. ESA Φ-lab’s long-term vision is to develop a digital assistant for EO, making complex EO data accessible to anyone interested in obtaining accurate information on Earth Observation-related topics worldwide.

The pilot version of the instrument will be unveiled in June. (photo by Bhavya Pratap Singh on Unsplash)
