D-Orbit and SkyServe together for edge computing in space

D-Orbit announces that it has started the process to enable edge computing capabilities with SkyServe’s Storm platform, aboard some ION Satellite Carriers that are part of the company’s fleet of orbital transport vehicles already in orbit (specifically, ION SCV004 Elysian Eleonora) and later, in 2025, aboard an ION with more advanced performance.

As part of the Matterhorn mission, SkyServe Storm will leverage D-Orbit’s real-time Earth observation data feed, as well as on-board computing and data distribution resources to process images and draw inferences directly in space and to deploy applications for using geospatial data. The mission is designed to enable companies that organize and analyze geospatial data to deploy artificial intelligence models on satellites, with the goal of significantly improving data processing and analysis capabilities in orbit.

“The deployment of SkyServe Storm represents a pivotal moment for data analysis in space. This mission with D-Orbit allows us to perform complex data processing operations in orbit, making space data more accessible and actionable for our customers,” Vinay Simha, CEO of SkyServe, said in a statement. We are excited to partner with D-Orbit to pioneer in-orbit data processing for edge computing applications.”

The deployment of SkyServe Storm on D-Orbit’s ION Satellite Carrier vehicle will provide a suite with data processing capabilities such as smart disk, tasking, compression and other deep learning capabilities on D-Orbit’s upcoming missions.

“I’m excited to be working on this mission with SkyServe. The mission highlights the level of collaboration between leading companies in the space technology sector, which translates into significant results for technology, business and society,” said Viney Jean-Francois Dhiri, Head of Business Development at D-Orbit. Partnering with SkyServe not only facilitates Storm, their in-orbit platform, but also aligns with our mission to provide comprehensive orbital services. Pairing our technology with that of edge computing vendors, as is the case with Unibap’s iX5 product, has allowed us to offer a new route to space for high-impact solutions, starting in 2023 and throughout 2024 and beyond.”

D-Orbit is committed to the implementation of software in orbit and this collaboration underscores the desire to drive innovation in the aerospace sector and to provide essential services that allow customers to demonstrate their capabilities in orbit, offering ongoing support to anyone who wants to take advantage of the unique benefits of space for their technologies and applications.
