Incapto, a Spanish startup that promotes the consumption of sustainable and fair trade specialty coffee beans, born in the middle of the pandemic in Barcelona with the aim of offering an alternative to capsules, announces that it has closed a 6 million euro investment round led by the P101 fund and with the participation of the partners of the company JME Ventures, Atresmedia, the Portuguese fund Bynd and the family office of the Drago family – De Agostini group. The operation will allow the Catalan company to continue its path of European expansion starting from Italy, France and Portugal. “This injection of capital is also a great injection of confidence for us, at such an important time as entering the Italian market, where coffee is much more than a beverage: it is an institution, a source of national pride. We are convinced that change must be put into practice immediately, each in his or her own daily life, and on our part we are committed every day to ensuring coffee that is good for the planet, for consumers and for growers,” Francesc Font, co-founder of Incapto, said in a statement. The startup was born from the meeting between Francesc Font and Joaquim Mach, co-founders, and Beatriz Mesas, professional coffee taster and also co-founder, when the first two feel the need to create an online sales business for recurring and sustainable purchases, finding in coffee a potentially ideal product, whose consumption translates into a serious impact on the planet.
Focus on sustainability
Consider, for example, that 60 billion coffee capsules are produced worldwide every year and that 80% of them end up in landfills or incinerators, according to the startup itself. These data make the transition to sustainable solutions even more urgent both from an environmental and human point of view, if we consider that 91% of the population drinks at least one cup a day in Italy, the seventh country in the world for consumption, with over 5 million bags every year (source: Coffee Promotion Consortium). All this in a global market that counts 9.5 billion kg of coffee produced annually, destined to triple by 2050. Thanks to a business model based on subscriptions to specialty coffee, both for companies and individuals, Incapto has reached 20 thousand customers in just over three years and more than two thousand companies connected to the platform, closing 2023 with a turnover of seven million euros that it expects to double in 2024. The company also allows you to buy super-automatic coffee machines to enjoy the freshly ground product, quickly and without generating any unnecessary waste. “We have made an approach based on ethics and sustainability our flag, in a market where 44% of small coffee producers live in situations of extreme poverty, according to the startup. By combining fair trade with responsible agricultural processes, we are working to introduce a new standard of coffee consumption, stemming the consequences of climate change and respecting the biodiversity that surrounds the cultivation areas,” concludes Joaquim Mach.
